German Lecturers co-teach with CUEA Humanities Lecturers
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) hosted three lecturers from Katholische Hochschule NRW (Catholic University of Applied Sciences, North Rhine-Westphalia), Germany, for an Erasmus+ staff teaching exchange from September 20 to 27, 2026.
The visiting lecturers—Mira, Sebastian Rost and Katharina Tewes—engaged students in the Department of Humanities in collaborative teaching sessions focused on sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kenya.
The exchange received strong support from the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Francis Muchoki, who welcomed the visitors to his office and encouraged closer academic ties between the two institutions. His support helped facilitate the visit and advance opportunities for collaboration.
Students Explore Kenya’s Sustainability Challenges
The Head of Department, Dr. Melvine Lilechi, worked with Dr. Frida Nyiva Mutui to organise the co-taught sessions, which encouraged students to examine sustainability challenges affecting Kenya and explore practical responses.
During one session, students mapped key issues facing the country, including poverty, corruption, climate change, pollution and gender bias. They then discussed possible solutions, connecting the SDGs to local realities and the role of communities in promoting sustainable development.
Beyond the classroom, the visiting lecturers toured social projects and explored the Nairobi’s art scene, broadening their engagement with Kenya’s social and cultural context.
Building a Lasting Academic Partnership
The visit built on an existing relationship between CUEA and Katholische Hochschule NRW. Dr. Mutui had previously taught in Germany, providing a foundation for continued academic exchange between the institutions.
The exchange reflected the value of international academic partnerships in enriching classroom learning, encouraging cross-cultural dialogue and creating opportunities for joint teaching and creative projects.
The Catholic University of Eastern Africa has an MoU with The Catholic University of Applied Sciences of North Rhine-Westphalia (Katholische Hochschule Nordrhein-Westfalen or KATHO), Germany.
So far we have had 2 staff members and 10 students from the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences participating in the Mobility programme.
