CSJE Trains 27 Certified Professional Mediators as Mediation Trainers

By Stephen Mbobu

The Centre for Social Justice and Ethics (CSJE) here at CUEA trained 27 Certified Professional Mediators to be trainers during a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop held from Tuesday, October 6 to Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the University’s Langata Campus.

The training concluded with a graduation and closing ceremony addressed by Sharon Asatsa, Court Administrator Mediation Accreditation Committee (MAC) Secretariat, Kenya Judiciary.

Addressing the newly trained mediators, Asatsa urged them to uphold the highest ethical standards in their mediation practice. She noted that unethical conduct will undermine their careers, stressing that trust remained the principal currency of mediation.

Most of the participants had qualified as Certified Professional Mediators in August 2026 before undertaking the ToT programme to prepare them to train other mediators.

New Trainers Challenged to Represent CUEA

Dr. Ann Kiboi, Dean of the School of Business and Economics (SOBE), who represented the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), urged the graduating trainers to become good ambassadors of CUEA, whose motto is Consecrate them in Truth and particularly the Centre for Social Justice and Ethics.

Her remarks came as CSJE continued to strengthen its position as a certified mediation training centre following its accreditation by the Judiciary’s Mediation Accreditation Committee (MAC) in June 2026 to offer certified mediation training.

CSJE has subsequently been listed among accredited mediation training institutions on the Judiciary’s website.

Trainers Urged to Promote Peace

Daisy Kerich, Director of Tatua Resolution Centre, CUEA’s training partner, challenged the new trainers to use their knowledge to promote peace and positively influence their communities.

Referring to Ephesians 2:10, she reminded the trainees of their responsibility to use their skills for good: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Kerich also invoked the words of Maya Angelou, “When you learn, teach, when you get, give,” urging the new trainers to share the knowledge and skills they had acquired.

Fr. Peter Mbaro, Director of CSJE, similarly called on the graduates to become peacemakers, drawing from Christ’s instruction to his disciples in Luke 10:5–6.

Growing Mediation Training Programme

The ToT workshop formed part of CSJE’s growing mediation training programme, which has continued to attract participants from CUEA as well as external subscribers from across Kenya and beyond.

In the final week of August 2026, CSJE conducted its second Certified Professional Mediators training, attracting 29 participants from across the country as well as several international participants. A separate Training of Trainers programme conducted during the same period attracted 30 trainers.

The Centre had conducted its first Certified Professional Mediators training in 2025.

CSJE’s accreditation by the Judiciary’s Mediation Accreditation Committee in June 2026 marked another step in the University’s engagement with professional mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

Mediation in Kenya’s Justice System
