Mission
Statement
The Department aims at undertaking independent and
collaborative research work across departments of faculties within the
university in order to inform social and economic policy and monitor
implementation of programmes.
Vision
The Department is committed to increasing
opportunities
for high quality research and special initiatives, thereby becoming a
centre of excellence in research and innovation
CUEA Research Committee
(a) Functions
and Responsibilitiess
- To promote and
co-ordinate relevant
scientific research in the faculties of the university, enriched by
African cultural and religious values, thought patterns, world-views
and experiences;
- To encourage
interdisciplinary research between the faculties and departments of the
university;
- To promote collaboration
between CUEA
and Catholic institutions involved in research in the AMECEA countries;
- To organize and
coordinate interfaculty staff seminars;
- To promote
research
collaboration with other universities and higher institutions of
learning in Africa and beyond;
- To collaborate with the
faculty research committees of the university;
- To monitor the quality
and suitability of resource materials submitted for CUEA publication;
- Assess and approve
research proposals submitted for funding
- To report to the
University Council through the Senate;
- Maintain a register of
approved
research proposals. The committee may withdraw approval for
any
project;
- To ensure that the
resources allocated are used for the purposes for which they were
intended.

- Two persons with
demonstrable commitment to and experience in research from each faculty

Method of Operation
The committee shall meet as required and not less
than
thrice a year. Records of all decisions shall be maintained.

Academic Integrity
CUEA would like all members of the university
community
to meet the highest standards of ethics in the conduct of
research. Research misconduct is, e.g., fabrication,
falsification and plagiarism. Allegations of research
misconduct
will be investigated by expert committees appointed by the CUEA
Research Committee and Senate.

Internal Funding Programmes
The university offers the following funding
opportunities to faculty members:
Research Grants
CUEA offers a wide range of research grants to
faculty
members. Grants are awarded based on merit. The
application
deadline for research grants is March 31. The following
research
grants are offered each year.

Faculty Research Grants
The university has faculty research grants to
help
faculty conduct research on a topic of interest. Five grants
may
be awarded on a competitive basis each year. The amount of
each
grant is not more than Kshs 150,000/-.

Graduate Study
The University will award five research grants
each
year on a competitive basis to faculty members who are registered
doctoral degree students to undertake research for their
course.
The amount of each grant is not more than Kshs 100,000/-
Applicants should submit:

Departmental Research Projects
Fund
Funds will be made available to support
departmental
research projects. The amount available for each year is Kshs
500,000/-

Research Capacity Building Fund
The University has research capacity building
funds,
which may be used by CUEA departments to develop the capacity of their
staff to conduct research. The funds may be employed for
organizing short courses on research methods. The amount
available for each year is Kshs 100,000/-

Project and Activities Grants
The University has grants to be awarded on a
competitive basis each year for innovative projects addressing the
problems of the underprivileged. The amount of the grant will
not
exceed Kshs 200,000/-.

A detailed proposal outlining the
applicant’s work
on the project to date and how the funds applied for will be utilized.

Faculty of Research Awards - Proposal Outline
1.
Title Page - Proposal
title, name, rank, department of applicant(s), campus address and
telephone of applicant(s), date submitted, proposal effective dates
(beginning and ending), funding amount requested, signatures of
Department Heads and Faculty Dean (to indicate their knowledge of
applicant’s proposal), Project summary (200 word Maximum - on
bottom half of title page).
2.
Project
Description (4-6 double-spaced pages) - Research
context,
statement of the problem, objectives of proposed research,
significance/value of proposed research (to faculty member(s),
students, University, community, discipline/profession, relation to
previous work and to future goals, plans to present project results),
review of related literature, detailed description of the methodology
of the proposed research, description of collaboration
(co-authors, off-campus facilities use), locations of research, dates
of proposed work including a time line of projected work for the
effective dates.
3.
Proposal
Budget Summary (1 page) - Salaries/wages/stipend
(project
director, undergraduate/graduate student, secretarial/clerical,
professionals—technician, programmer), equipment, supplies
and
materials, copy charges, telephone, postage, computer services,
technical services photography, electronics), publication costs/page
charges, travel, per diem.
4.
Proposal
Budget Justification (1-2 pages) - Briefly document or
justify each line item requested in the Proposed Budget
Summary.
Use the same order and item numbers in the Budget Summary and
Justification.
5.
Current/Pending Support of Applicant (1 page) -
Source, purpose, amount, effective funding dates of each.
6.
Previous
Faculty Research Award Received (1 page) - year(s),
title(s), amount(s) received, start and end dates.
