Pope Francis has called an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme “The Pastoral Challenges of the family in the context of Evangelization.”
Thursday 13th February 2014, marked the launch of The Year of the Family at The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). The Chancellor, Most Rev. Tarcisius Ziyaye, presided over the Eucharistic Celebration. The climax was the unveiling of The Year of The Family banner by the Chancellor and the University Council members.
The first reading was from the book of Sirach chapter 3: 2-6, and verse 12-14. The Responsorial Psalm was from Psalm chapter 128 and the Gospel reading from St. Matthew chapter 2:13-15, and verse 20-23. Delivering his homily, Most Rev. Ziyaye gave an inspirational message on the duty we have toward each other as members of one family created by God. Using the example of the Holy Family, Most Rev. Ziyaye observed that Jesus had a duty to fulfill towards his parents Mary and Joseph, and they too had a duty to fulfill towards their child.
In the same manner, Most Rev. Ziyaye called upon all students, staff and members of the CUEA community to be each other’s brothers and sisters’ keeper and to fulfill their duty to one another. “It is important to consider that everybody has something to offer to the community here. Nobody is too poor to share in this community of God. We need one another. We have a duty to help one another.”
After the Holy Mass, all the members from CUEA’s Lang’ata Campus who assisted in coordinating their faculties, departments and sections during the Year of Faith were issued with certificates of recognition.

Below is a link on the working document in preparation for this synod.
The synod, which will take place at the Vatican from 5th to 19th October, 2014, is a means through which the Holy Father wishes to continue the reflection and journey of the whole church, with the participation of leaders of Episcopate from every corner of the world.
It is important that the church moves forward together as a community in reflection and prayer and decide on common pastoral orientations dealing with most important aspects of our life together, particularly on the family, under the guidance of the Pope and bishops.
As we address various pastoral issues in our studies at CUEA it is important that we move forward in full communion with the ecclesial community.
