BRIEF INRODUCTION

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa’s School of Graduate Studies was established in October 2013. It serves the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology, the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Commerce, Science, Education and Law, the Institutes of Canon Law and Regional Integration and Development, the Centre for social Justice and Ethics, and the School of Professional Development. The School of Graduate Studies was launched on Wednesday 21st May 2014 by His Grace, Archbishop Tarcisio Ziyaye, then, Chancellor of Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

SGS serves the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences; Canon Law; Commerce; Education; Law; Professional Development; Science; Social Justice & Ethics and Theology. It is a unique school where faith, value, research, excellence, integrity, uniqueness and professionalism integrate to produce world class transformative leaders and innovative entrepreneurs in Church and Society.

 

KEY FACILITIES

The School of Graduate Studies was established to coordinate and facilitate excellent academic, administrative and financial activities of postgraduate students. The School prioritizes excellence and integrity in postgraduate research and training, organization of conferences, symposia, workshops, seminars, roundtable discussion, public lectures, timely dissemination of research findings and publishing. Focusing on high quality and cutting-edge research, the School provides practical and evidence-based ethical solutions to the myriad of challenges facing people in the AMECEA region, Africa and beyond. It is envisioned that through the SGS, the Catholic University will use its research output to influence transformatively policy-making within the Church, Governments and non-state agencies. With this functionality, CUEA’s SGS strives to be the locus for leading the Catholic University into a truly world class ‘Research University’ with unique Ecclesiastical and Civil orientations.

 

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

The SGS Governing Board was constituted and had orientation on 07th March 2014 in CUEA’s Paul VI Learning Resource Centre [LRC]. The Board has the following members:

2. The SGS Research and Publishing Steering Committee was constituted and had orientation in March 2014. The committee members are:

3. The SGS Streamlining and Harmonizing Policy Committee was established in April 2014. The Committee is comprised of the SGS Governing Board members, including Dr. Shem Mal’wa and Mr.K’Ahenda. It had its Retreat on 1st to 2nd July 2014 a tDimesse Spirituality Centre in Karen.

4. The SGS Offices and Secretariat are hosted in CUEA’s Bishop Macaulay Memorial Library on the first floor. They were officially opened on 23rd . February 2014.

5. There has been a steady and smooth transition from CUEA’s School of Postgraduate Studies to CIEA’s School of Graduate Studies. All academic sections were informed about the nature of the school.

6. SGS participated in an Annual International Writers. Conference co-organized by CUEA and Moi University in Gaba-Eldoret under he theme: “Church, State and Development in the last 50 Years of Africa’s Independence [12th to 14th February, 2014]

7. SGS’ CUPSA [Catholic University Postgraduate Students Association] in conjunction with CUEA Research Department organized a‘Research-Community Service Workshop’ under the Theme: “Stepping Stones to Credible Research: Postgraduate Seminar on the Art of Academic Writing” on 05th March 2014 in the Jubilee-Hall Auditorium.

8. SGS animated its first University Holy Mass presided over by CUEA’s Vice Chancellor: Very Rev. Msrg. Dr. Pius Rutechura and concelebrated by the Director of SGS. Rev. Prof. Clement Majawa and the Chairperson of SGS Post Graduate Students [CUPSA] Rev. Fr. Semankule …….. on 27th March 2014. The Theme of the celebration was “The Lord is Our Shield, Fear Nothing”.

9. SGS in collaboration with the Department of Research and the Centre for Social Justice and Ethics organized a First Round-Table Discussion under the Theme: “The Sanctity and Permanence of Marriage and Family amidst Global Unethical Threats in the 21st Century in Africa and Beyond”. The Guest Speakers were Rt. Rev. Bishop John Oballa [Ngong Catholic Diocese] and Rev. John Gichuru [KAJIADO Anglican Diocese] It was held on 23 rd. May 2014.

9. SGS was instrumental in the Drafting of CUEA’s Graduate Assistantship Policy. The policy was approved in Resolution no. 5 of the 59 th Ordinary University Council held on 2nd October 2014.

10. SGS in collaboration with CUEA Chaplaincy organized a successful Tripartite Pilgrimage [with reflections on Pilgrim-Institutional Church; Purgatorial-Suffering Church and Triumphant-Heavenly Church] on 01st November 2014, under the theme: “ Journeying with the Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life “[Jn.14:6] The Pilgrimage began at CUEA Langata Campus, proceeded to the Holy Family Basilica, then to St. Austin’s cemetery and concluded at the Resurrection Garden.

 

UNIQUENESS OF THE PROGRAMME

1. The academic programs are made in such a way that they are tailored to capture the Human and Christian values. There are Common Courses which instill excellence, quality, integrity and holistic formation in the students. Course like: Bible, Christian Ethics, Social Teaching of the Church and also Computer studies, etc. are taught as Common Course to all Postgraduate students in all Faculties. A unique Course of Patristic Education is taught to the Doctoral students of the Faculty of Education.

2. SGS follows the Tripartite Quality-Assurance Mechanism: The quality assurance of the programs and courses in SGS is determined by [a] Intellectual Tradition of the Catholic Church articulated in the two Documents: Ex Corde Ecclesiae and Sapientia Christiana [b] The University ACT and Policies of Kenya’s Commission of University Education [c] The Procedures of KEBS: ISO 2001: 2008.

3. The Programs are implementation with Patristic Model of Evaluation: Quality and Transformative education is realized when there is Excellence, Justice, Integrity and Professionalism at the Entry point, Exam point and Exist point of the SGS. Education is not Exam-oriented nor Research for personal gratification. Programs with Patristic niche focus on three Cs: Conscience, Character and Community [St Thomas Aquinas 1225-1274]
