The Commonwealth was represented in a rather special way this month. When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry on Saturday, she wore a flower from each of the Commonwealth’s member nations embroidered on her veil. The 53 hand-stitched motifs – from the Indian lotus to Kenya's tropical orchid – signalled the couple’s commitment to the Commonwealth, and followed Prince Harry’s appointment as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador just a few weeks earlier.
I was proud to be in the audience for his first speech, in which he spoke with great admiration of the young people he now represents: their compassion, their interconnectedness, and their power to change the world. Higher education will be critical if they are to reach their potential, and the ACU is working to ensure that universities are vibrant, thriving, accessible institutions for all.
First up this month, students are invited to apply for a new round of Commonwealth Scholarships, with eight fully-funded Master’s scholarships tenable at member universities in Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the South Pacific.
Registration has also just opened for our upcoming Canadian conference for human resources professionals working in the higher education sector across the Commonwealth. The conference will provide the perfect setting for members to work together on meeting the challenges and exploring the opportunities of the future for HR in higher education.
Disparity in pay is a hot topic currently with research highlighting the differences in salary among colleagues and peers. At the ACU, we conduct the only ongoing survey of academic salaries in Commonwealth countries and integrate it with our annual online benchmarking service – ACU Measures – to provide valuable insights and comparisons across institutions. Participation is free for members and data entry closes next week; make sure your university doesn’t miss out.
Finally, can I ask you to spend a few minutes giving us feedback on this monthly newsletter? We launched it six months ago and would welcome your thoughts.

Best wishes,
Joanna Newman
ACU Chief Executive and Secretary General
