Historical background

The official name of the library at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, is Bishop McCauley Memorial Library. The library had been set up to meet the academic needs of the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (C.H.I.E.A.) which was officially inaugurated in 1985. Since 1992 when C.H.I.E.A. was accredited with a university charter, the library has been addressing the academic needs of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. For convenience’s sake however, instead of referring to the library as “Bishop McCauley Memorial Library” it is being referred to as “CUEA Library”

Learning Resource Center

Since its inception in the 20th century, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa has grown tremendously, thus causing natural growth on other areas. And one of the areas affected being the library, the heart of the university. In order to address the ever increasing demands of information needs, the university has embarked on a “capital campaign for the Library”, a brainchild project networked both locally and globally. With the state-of-art of funding raising activities currently underway, the thought of a having a “Future Learning Resource Center in place” is now a dream come true soon than thought.

Goals

Building up a collection of print and non-print information resources that supports research and instructional programs of the university. Providing information communication technologies that are commensurate with the growing number of the users. Provide a conducive environment and support the university in creating a lifelong learning culture.

Objectives

The library has a twofold objective namely to equip the university community with information skills and also to transform the community into critical thinkers. In order to achieve the former, the library will be offering a full course on information literacy skills instead of just orientation programmes. It will however achieve the letter by offering consultancy services to enable the users to objectively analyze information for the good of the society.
